The following is a non-comprehensive list of terms that you might hear Rotaractors use, but that you may not really understand without an explanation.
Change-over or hand-over – formal meeting where new Members are officially inducted, and our Rotaract year officially begins.
District – the geographical region used to classify and organise Rotary Clubs. We’re in number 9570, which extends throughout Central Queensland as far north as Mackay, west past Longreach, and south to Maryborough. We are definitely the best Rotaract Club in our District. Also, we’re the only Rotaract Club in our District.
DG – District Governor. The elected Rotarian who co-ordinates and supervises Rotary/Rotaract activities in their District.
District Conference – annual meeting of all of the Rotary and Rotaract Clubs from one District.
RYLA - Rotary Youth Leadership Awards: a week-long youth leadership training program (ours is held in Hervey Bay) that is sponsored by Rotary Clubs. Many Rotaractors attend RYLA.
Sergeants – common to both Rotary and Rotaract, these are people who ‘fine’ Club members for their misdeeds, hopefully in a humorous or light-hearted manner. The fine in question is usually one dollar. Our Club nominates Sergeants for our formal meetings only; all members are given free licence to bag out other members, in good fun, at any time.
The following terms are unique to the Rotaract Club of Gladstone. Using them in any other context will make you look like a crazy person.
Brunk – a “bunch of drunks” (Chris P, 2010).
Fairy Godfather – a Rotarian who is able to make things happen for our Club nearly instantly. Currently, Len Woodman (Rotary Club of Gladstone Midday).
Feeder pool – what Rotarians secretly call us, as they will try to poach retired Rotaractors for their Club.
Harvesting – to poach a Rotarian’s child or grandchild into our Club, as in “we can harvest their children!” (Alicia, 2009).
Rusty – name of uncomfortable robotic outfit constructed by our Club. To “do a Rusty” is to take part in any activity that seems fun, but will later result in public ridicule.
Volunteer – to be nominated for a job at a meeting you didn’t attend (most commonly, because you didn’t attend).
“Your Ticket to Fun!” – dynamic, exciting, unpopular Club slogan.
